The town

Ooty, in October.

Cold mornings far from town

Ooty is a town in the Nilgiri Mountains of Tamil Nadu located at an altitude of 2,240 m. It features a subtropical highland climate with temperatures generally lower than the surrounding plains. The town serves as a market town for the surrounding area which is largely dependent on agriculture.

October here
12–19°C, rain most daysBy the numbers the months to come are Jan and Feb. Ten years of measured days, not a brochure. Worth 3 nights. With multiple distinct areas like Havelock Rd, N Lake Rd, and Doddabetta Peak, you need at least three days to explore the gardens, lakes, and viewpoints without rushing.
Worth a morning
A local adds
  • The Murugan Temple, Elk Hill is a quiet place mostly visited by locals.
  • The Ooty Municipal Market holds a daily wholesale auction of local agricultural products.
Not worth it
  • Ooty Viewpoint may be isolated and located on private property.
Carry
  • Bring a rain jacket and shoes that dry for the wet season.
  • Pack a warm layer for cold nights in January.
  • At 2,235 m the sun is strong even when the air is cool: sunscreen and a hat, whatever the month.

Every line above is a record allto stood behind for Ooty, and 9 days were worked out from its map. Where to eat, below, is matched from the same record.

We stayed at La Montana, Ooty for 4 days and had a pleasant overall experience. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. The highlight of the stay was definitely the breathtaking valley view, which made for a peaceful and relaxing getaway. One issue we faced was that there was no hot water in the bathroom on the first day. Considering Ooty's cold weather, hot water is a basic necessity. However, after we reported it, the staff resolved the issue promptly, and we didn't face the problem again during the rest of our stay. The breakfast buffet was decent, but the menu became quite repetitive over a longer stay. Since the property is located a little away from the city, we mostly depended on the in-house restaurant for dinner. The non-vegetarian dishes were good, but we felt the vegetarian options could have been much better. On our last day, we discovered that Swiggy/Zomato deliveries from restaurants in Ooty were available, and we wish we had known that earlier, as it gave us more food choices. Overall, I would definitely recommend La Montana if you're looking for a relaxing stay with stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. For meals, especially if you're staying for a few days, I'd suggest exploring nearby restaurants or ordering in for more variety.

Had an excellent stay! The rooms were perfect, the views were breathtaking, and the food was amazing. What truly made our experience memorable was the staff. Everyone-from the reception team, the person who helped with our luggage, the housekeeping staff, and especially the restaurant team-was incredibly respectful, responsible, and welcoming. A special thanks to Nadhan, Vijay, and the entire restaurant team for their exceptional hospitality and care. Every staff member greeted us with a smile and made us feel right at home. Their warmth, professionalism, and genuine kindness made our stay truly unforgettable. Highly recommended, and we look forward to visiting again!

Really great experience. Highly recommended place to stay. Location was really great valley view, you just sit in balcony and feel the peace and nature. Room was neat, clean and spacious. Food was good, not the best, but good in taste. We had breakfast and dinner included, items were limited , but good in taste. Staff behaviour and Service was good. Nice play ground for kids also.

We had a group stay. The rooms are pretty spacious and can easily accommodate 3. The rooms are on the slope, so every room has a beautiful valley view. The ooty train track runs just below the resort and can hear the train whistle often which adds to the experience. The breakfast served is perfect, the food is tasty and the service is top notch. Location is around 15 minutes from the Ooty Lake.

We stayed at La Montana by TGI during our Ooty trip and had a memorable experience overall. The biggest highlight was the breathtaking 180-degree valley view from our room. The balcony was more like a spacious private terrace, and we spent hours there enjoying the scenery during the day and the night sky after sunset. The location is also excellent, with most major attractions in and around Ooty within about 10 km. The staff were courteous and helpful throughout our stay. On the downside, the food did not quite meet our expectations, and many dishes listed on the menu were unavailable during our visit. Guests looking for extensive resort activities may also find the outdoor facilities limited to a small common area and a children's play area. One thing to keep in mind is accessibility. Due to the hillside design, the property involves climbing steps and may not be ideal for elderly guests or those with mobility concerns. The cable car-like facility was not operational during our stay, and it would be best to confirm accessibility arrangements with the property before booking. That said, if you're looking for stunning views, a peaceful atmosphere, and a convenient base to explore Ooty, La Montana is well worth considering.
