The town

Ooty, in October.

Cold mornings far from town

Ooty is a town in the Nilgiri Mountains of Tamil Nadu located at an altitude of 2,240 m. It features a subtropical highland climate with temperatures generally lower than the surrounding plains. The town serves as a market town for the surrounding area which is largely dependent on agriculture.

October here
12–19°C, rain most daysBy the numbers the months to come are Jan and Feb. Ten years of measured days, not a brochure. Worth 3 nights. With multiple distinct areas like Havelock Rd, N Lake Rd, and Doddabetta Peak, you need at least three days to explore the gardens, lakes, and viewpoints without rushing.
Worth a morning
A local adds
  • The Murugan Temple, Elk Hill is a quiet place mostly visited by locals.
  • The Ooty Municipal Market holds a daily wholesale auction of local agricultural products.
Not worth it
  • Ooty Viewpoint may be isolated and located on private property.
Carry
  • Bring a rain jacket and shoes that dry for the wet season.
  • Pack a warm layer for cold nights in January.
  • At 2,235 m the sun is strong even when the air is cool: sunscreen and a hat, whatever the month.

Marlihill Bungalow is a small heritage property run by CGH Earth Saha, set on Snowden Road near Ooty Botanical Garden. It’s a 5-6 room bungalow, so it feels more like staying at a private home than a hotel. It’s quiet, tucked into the hills with a garden and hill views. About 10-15 min from Ooty town and close to Botanical Garden. Guests keep mentioning how peaceful it is good if you want to escape the crowd.

My stay at Marli Hill Bungalow was the perfect escape into the hills, paired with truly exceptional hospitality. Amaljith, Vishnu, and Surya went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable, thoughtfully tailoring every detail to our needs. From the beautifully maintained rooms to the delicious food, everything was handled with such care and warmth that we genuinely felt like we were staying with family. CGH Earth is renowned for its heartfelt hospitality, but it is the people who make the experience truly unforgettable. Marli Hill Bungalow is the ideal place to unwind amidst nature, slow down, and reconnect with yourself. I’m already looking forward to coming back soon!

Had an absolutely blissful stay at Marli hill, Ooty. Mr. Amaljith, his wife Geethu & the entire staff take care of you and your needs like a family. Property is very well maintained and as it’s a boutique property, it’s very calm and soothing atmosphere. Lots of birds chirping around and you can also have breakfast in the garden. Rooms are good size, vintage, huge bathrooms, and in April we could easily manage without fan &AC - it’s super cold at night. Heater is available on demand. Overall had a very relaxing stay and looking forward to visit again.

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at CGH Marlihill Bungalow in Ooty. The hospitality was truly at its best, and the food served on the premises was excellent. A special thank you to the manager, Amaljith, as well as Geetu and the rest of the staff, who went out of their way to make our visit memorable. One of the best parts is the location—despite being situated so close to many popular landmarks, the property remains incredibly quiet and peaceful. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended!
