The town

Ooty, in October.

Cold mornings far from town

Ooty is a town in the Nilgiri Mountains of Tamil Nadu located at an altitude of 2,240 m. It features a subtropical highland climate with temperatures generally lower than the surrounding plains. The town serves as a market town for the surrounding area which is largely dependent on agriculture.

October here
12–19°C, rain most daysBy the numbers the months to come are Jan and Feb. Ten years of measured days, not a brochure. Worth 3 nights. With multiple distinct areas like Havelock Rd, N Lake Rd, and Doddabetta Peak, you need at least three days to explore the gardens, lakes, and viewpoints without rushing.
Worth a morning
A local adds
  • The Murugan Temple, Elk Hill is a quiet place mostly visited by locals.
  • The Ooty Municipal Market holds a daily wholesale auction of local agricultural products.
Not worth it
  • Ooty Viewpoint may be isolated and located on private property.
Carry
  • Bring a rain jacket and shoes that dry for the wet season.
  • Pack a warm layer for cold nights in January.
  • At 2,235 m the sun is strong even when the air is cool: sunscreen and a hat, whatever the month.

My recent stay at this Sterling property was extremely disappointing and far below the standards I expected from a reputed hospitality brand. I experienced multiple issues related to room maintenance, cleanliness, and housekeeping. Even after being moved to another room, basic cleanliness standards were not met. The room appeared inadequately cleaned, essential amenities were missing, and the washroom was in a poor and unhygienic condition. What was most concerning was the apparent lack of proper room inspection before guests were checked in. Cleanliness, hygiene, and basic guest comfort are fundamental expectations, and unfortunately, my experience fell short on all three. While the staff were polite and tried to assist, the recurring issues significantly impacted my stay and overshadowed any positive aspects of the property. I hope Sterling takes this feedback constructively and strengthens its housekeeping, maintenance, and quality control processes to ensure a better experience for future guests. Would not recommend based on my experience.

Pretty ordinary experience considering the price paid and the brand name associated. Haven't stayed in any other Sterling property so not sure overall but this property doesn't deserve 4-star tag if you ignore the spaciousness and land-parcel size. The management and upkeep is below average. The hospitality and inventory management is pathetic. Showed pictures of Premium rooms on Agoda while booking under the name of Classic Rooms and ofcourse you'd book according to what you see in pictures as well as room details mentioned. Once you reach, you are given totally different room with no windows and the rooms located downstairs, having to take some 35 odd stairs. Had senior citizens with us, hence I had dropped them mails beforehand to allocate pristine and easily accessible rooms but upon reaching they'd tell you, 'surpise surprise!! The rooms you thought you booked are not what you get' and you can't even upgrade and get those rooms coz all those rooms we have booked with others already. After literally 1.5 hours of messing around and visiting 3-4 different set of rooms (had booked 2 rooms) in different directions of property, they just raise their hands and say, you take whatever is left or feel free to cancel your booking at this odd hour after driving all the way. Although we were shifted to the actual expected rooms the next day but this kind of mess and casual experience you wouldn't expect after paying so much and booking a premium (atleast so-called) brand. Wouldn't recommend!!

A lovely hotel offering great views and a pleasant overall stay. The staff are polite, courteous, and always willing to help, which adds to the comfort of the experience. The breakfast spread was good, with a decent variety to choose from, and there is sufficient parking space available, making it convenient for guests. The hotel also features a nice open garden area with beautiful views, which is a great place to relax and unwind. However, the only disappointment was the Classic Room layout. It is designed as a loft-style room, with the sofa and dining area on the ground floor and the bedroom on the first floor. This made it a bit inconvenient, as for any room service request, we had to come down to the ground floor to call, which felt like unnecessary back-and-forth between floors. Apart from this room layout issue, the overall experience was quite enjoyable.

Booked a clasic room, but the room was not at all as per expectations.. stinky room, key card not working and other basic hygiene issue. Service was good and despite resort spread across big area, services was quick. Location was awesome and view is picture perfect. I suggest to book premium suite room.

I had a wonderful stay at Sterling Ooty Fern Hills. The property is beautiful, the ambiance is peaceful, and the overall experience was truly enjoyable. The food was excellent—fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared throughout our stay. The service was also very good, with staff always attentive and friendly. A special mention to Mr. Radha and his team, who were incredibly helpful and made our stay even more comfortable. Their warm hospitality and prompt assistance really stood out. Overall, a great stay. Highly recommended!
